Prostate Cancer Cells Killed By Pectin In Fruits And Vegetables

Saturday 25 August 2007
A new University of Georgia study finds that pectin, a type of fiber found in fruits and vegetables and used in making jams and other foods, kills prostate cancer cells.

The study, published in the August issue of the journal Glycobiology, found that exposing prostate cancer cells to pectin under laboratory conditions reduced the number of cells by up to 40 percent.

Pectin even killed cells that aren’t sensitive to hormone therapy and therefore are difficult to treat with current medications.

Pectin, a polysaccharide, is found in primary cell wall of plants. Sugar residue is the composition of pectin, which is also called as D-galacturonic acid.

Food sources in which pectin is present! Pectin is available in all plants, but the availability of the content differs depending on the variety, tissue, species, plant part, growing condition and maturity. The content of pectin is more in citrus fruits and legumes than cereals.

The fruits that contain high levels of pectin are grapes, oranges, apricots and apples. In citrus fruits, sixty to seventy percent of dietary fiber is pectin. Pectin is also found in cabbage, banana, carrots and beets.

Bothered With Glaucoma? Here Are The Advanced Treatment Options To Get Relief!

Friday 24 August 2007

glaucomaHave you ever heard about glaucoma? It is a group of eye diseases.

It damages the eye’s optic nerve thus leading to vision loss or possibility of blindness.

It is a principle cause of blindness in the United States. The disease occurs mainly due to the raise in fluid level in your eyes.

When the fluid level slowly increases, it damages the optic nerve.

When your eye’s drainage system is not working properly and fluid builds up, you are suffering with the condition called glaucoma. At the beginning you won’t observe any symptoms, but a complete eye examination can detect the symptoms. The earlier you recognize the symptoms of glaucoma, the sooner you can protect your eyes from vision loss.

The usual treatments for glaucoma include prescription eye drops or surgery. This will depend up on to how much extent your eyes got damaged. More than 66.8 million people around the world are suffering from visual injury from glaucoma, among which 6.7 million people are suffering from blindness. In the United States alone 2.2 million people have glaucoma.

Use Of Insulin Pen May Save Diabetics Thousands Of Dollars

Friday 24 August 2007
Diabetics who need to switch from oral medications to insulin could reduce their annual healthcare costs up to $17,000 by using an insulin pen instead of a syringe to deliver their daily dose of medication.

A new study found that using an insulin pen may result in fewer trips to the emergency department and to the doctor’s office, resulting in substantial savings to diabetics and their insurers.

“For one, there is less chance of getting the wrong dose of insulin,” said Rajesh Balkrishnan, the study’s senior author and the Merrell Dow professor of pharmacy at Ohio State University. “Diabetics who use syringes must carefully measure their insulin, so there is a risk of getting too much or too little.”

Insulin pen delivers insulin, which looks like a large pen. It uses insulin cartridge and disposable needles. Insulin pens are easy to use.

Insulin pen types:

There are different types of insulin pens that fall into two categories: disposable pens and reusable pens.

High Blood Pressure Frequently Undiagnosed In Children

Thursday 23 August 2007

high blood pressureEven children and young kids are getting high blood pressure.

It is being diagnosed in more and more children.

Five percent children are suffering from high blood pressure, a condition in which blood vessels and heart overwork.

High blood pressure in children is caused due to many factors such as overweight, kidney problems, intake of salt and other illnesses.

The levels of hypertension will be different for children compared to adults.

Adult hypertension levels will be standard where as kid’s blood pressure readings are measured according to gender, age and height.

High blood pressure among children and adolescents, a growing problem linked to increasing juvenile obesity, often goes undiagnosed in the United States, according to a study published.

This is dangerous, as high blood pressure can quietly damage the organs, especially the kidneys, the researchers reported in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association. High blood pressure, or hypertension, often signals another disease in children, like endocrine disorders, kidney or heart disease.

Alcohol Consumption Linked To HIV Disease Progression, Study Shows

Wednesday 22 August 2007
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) have found a link between alcohol consumption and HIV disease progression in HIV-infected persons.

Alcohol use is common among HIV-infected persons, and its impact on HIV disease progression has been examined in in-vitro, animal and human studies. Alcohol may adversely affect immunologic function in HIV-infected persons by various mechanisms, including increased HIV replication in lymphocytes.

For related information on alcohol consumption and HIV, visit:
http://www.sciencedaily.com

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that is transmitted through sexual contact with infected person, through infected blood exchange, or from mother to baby. A person’s immune system is destroyed by HIV and the white blood cells are impaired, which are necessary for the immune protection.

Therefore hiv virus progresses to AIDS and a person is prone to brain abscesses, lung infections and various other infections.

Alcohol consumption and immune system:

The immune system which protects the body from illnesses is impaired by alcohol. Infection fighting white blood cells are reduced by the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol consumption can suppress immune system cells activities, also called as macrophages, which help in keeping the lungs free from infection.

Whole Grains May Lower Odds Of High Blood Pressure

Wednesday 22 August 2007
Women who get plenty of whole grains in their diet may lower their risk of developing high blood pressure, a large study suggests.

Researchers found that middle-aged and older women who ate the most whole grains were less likely than those with the lowest intakes to develop high blood pressure over the next 10 years. The benefit was modest. Women who consumed the most whole grains had an 11-percent lower risk of high blood pressure than those with the lowest intakes.

For related information on whole grain benefits, visit:

Whole grains are good sources of fiber and other important nutrients such as potassium, magnesium and selenium. Whole grains include germ, bran and endosperm which contain valuable nutrients. Germ is a part from which a new plant sprouts and is a concentrated source of thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin E, zinc and iron. The germ also contains protein and fat.

Bran forms the outer layer of seed and is a rich source of thiamin, niacin, magnesium, riboflavin, iron, zinc and phosphorus. The endosperm is also called as kernel, make up the bulk of the seed. Endosperm contains most of grain’s protein and carbohydrates and little amount of minerals and vitamins.

Oral Allergy Syndrome Made Worse By Ragweed, Fruits And Vegetables

Tuesday 21 August 2007

Does your mouth or throat become itchy after eating fresh fruits or vegetables during the fall season? For some people, seasonal allergy symptoms may be made worse by consuming fresh fruits or vegetables due to “oral allergy syndrome” (OAS), according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).

Oral allergy syndrome is an allergy which is caused due to certain raw vegetables, fruits, spices, seeds and nuts. Allergic reactions are caused in the mouth and throat. Allergic reactions occur in people with hay fever, especially spring hay fever due to birch pollen and late summer hay fever due to ragweed pollen.

OAS is caused by allergens in the air such as ragweed, which begins to bloom around August 15. “The pollen released from ragweed is the airborne allergen primarily responsible for the onslaught of allergy symptoms in the fall,” said Clifford W. Bassett, MD, FAAAAI. “For the 36 million people suffering from ragweed allergies, it is important to know about pollen-food syndrome, also known as oral allergy syndrome.

The most frequent symptoms of OAS include itchiness, swelling and hives affecting the mouth, face/lip and throat area.
