Physicians Test New Device For Diagnosing And Treating Prostate Cancer

Samir Taneja, MD., Director of Urologic Oncology is the Primary Investigator on a clinical trial in order to test Envisioneering Technologies’ new mechanical device called TargetScan, which preliminary tests indicate can improve doctors’ ability to detect cancer and could lead to more targeted treatments—reducing life-altering side effects like impotence and incontinence.

TargetScan is the latest device in detecting prostate cancer. In this technology, 3-D image acquisition is combined with stationary probe which helps the physicians plan and execute targeted prostated biopsies.

Current prostate biopsy procedures require urologists to hold and pivot a probe with one hand, while performing a needle biopsy with the other hand. The inherent variables with the current hand-held method can force doctors to miss potential cancers, producing false negatives, and require multiple biopsies once cancer is found to determine its extent.

The TargetScan device is fixed and it allows making more accurate scan of the prostate gland. For patients with prostate cancer, TargetScan device allows precise treatment of an infected area. The common treatment side effects like sexual function and incontinence can be avoided when patients are diagnosed with Target Scan.

It is a targeted biopsy system with single use needle. Multi-position probe carriage provides full sagittal and tranverse access to the target site.

Working of TargetScan:

First the preferred locations of tissue samples are planned in different quadrants of prostrate. The biopsy plan is saved to the file. A biopsy needle is inserted into the targeted area. Biopsy needle position and accuracy are monitored. Also monitor the tissue sample captured by biopsy needle at specific location. The captured tissue sample specific location is recorded.

As the probe can be maintained in one position while the transducer is moved internally, it gives advantage over the three dimensional imaging with other methods.

The automated image positioning capabilities of the probe and three dimensional images allow to plan the treatment.

Due to the 3-D capabilities of the probe, complete image of the prostate is allowed and ability of planning software is improved to target the seed placement for maximum effectiveness.

As there is no need to move the probe, prostate remains stable giving precise application. A proper treatment plan can be formulated by identifying specific areas of the tissue or organ to be treated. This treatment plan can also be used for future reference.
