Colitis - An Acute Inflammation Of The Membrane Lining The Colon

Friday 11 January 2008

ColitisColitis also called as ulcerative colitis; it is a chronic or acute inflammation and sores (ulcers) of the membrane lining the colon. Colon is your large intestine or bowel.

Colitis is a condition which causes ulcers in the top layer of the lining of the large intestine. This condition rarely affects the small intestine.

Inflammation causes the colon to become empty frequently. This condition is called as diarrhea. Ulcers usually form in the areas where the inflammation has destroyed colon lining cells. Some times ulcers bleed and also produce mucus and pus.

You may also experience painful spasms, crampy abdominal pain, fever, lack of appetite, fatigue and rectal bleeding. The symptoms of ulcerative colitis can be similar to other intestinal disorders such as Crohn’s disease (Irritable bowel syndrome). So it is very difficult to diagnose this condition.

Colitis can be affected differently for person to person. The stress of living with ulcerative colitis can also contribute to a worsening of symptoms. Having psychological and emotional support is very important.

Sometimes doctors will recommend removing the colon if medical treatment fails or if the side effects of the medications threaten the patient’s condition.

Angioplasty To Reduce Blockages In Coronary Artery!

Thursday 3 January 2008

angioplastyAngioplasty is a procedure performed to reduce or eliminate coronary artery disease.

Angioplasty restores the blood flow to the blood deprived heart tissue, reduces or eliminates the number of angina episodes and reduces the need for medications.

Angioplasty for coronary artery disease:

In angioplasty procedure, balloon catheter is used to dilate narrow section of coronary artery. Shorter recovery time is required for angioplasty than bypass surgery. Stents are inserted during the procedure of angioplasty.

After sedation, a thin flexible tube or catheter is included in the groin or arm through an artery and it is carefully guided into the blocked coronary artery up the aorta. Cardiac catheterization or coronary angiography is performed to identify any blockages if present.

How stents are placed during angiography?

A stent is a small wire, which can be expandable, is inserted permanently during angioplasty into the artery. Inside the stent, a balloon should be placed and inflated. It opens the stent and is pushed against the artery wall. Now, the stent is left in the place by deflating and removing the balloon.
