Aircraft Noise Could Put Your Heart At Risk

According to a recent study, it was found that those people who were exposed more to noise that emanated from airplanes, were more likely to suffer from heart disease. This connection between heart attack risk and living near flight paths was studied by Matthias Egger and researcher colleagues of the University of Bern.

The levels of the loudness of the noise as well as the duration for which people were exposed to the noise, were determinants of the cardiovascular risk of people. This study could help clarify the point as to whether it was just the loud noise or whether it was combination of factors such as air pollution that were responsible for the increase of heart attack risk among those living close to airports or other flight paths.

A similar increased risk of heart disease has also been noted among people who lived close to other places that have high levels of noise and air pollution such as busy roads and highways.

The study indentified that those exposed to 60 decibels or more of noise had a 30 percent greater risk of dying from a heart attack when compared with those people who were exposed to less than 45 decibels of noise. And when the duration of that exposure was also taken into account, it was found that when people were exposed to noise for more than 15 years, this risk was 50% higher.
