Treatment Methods for Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus

  • In this condition, doctors generally prescribe a low salt diet to the patients in order to decrease the amount of urine which the kidneys produce. To treat this type of diabetes, doctors also often prescribe the patients to drink a lot of water so that they can prevent dehydration.
  • In order to improve the symptoms of this disease, the doctors may prescribe a drug called hydrochlorothiazide which may either be used alone or with some or the other medication prescribed. This particular drug is a diuretic which means that it is given to increase the amount of urine produced but in the case of people with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, it can decrease the quantity of urine.
  • In certain cases, this disease may be caused due to the medications you are taking to cure some other condition or disease. Thus in such cases, you must stop or reduce the intake of those medications, but this must not be done without taking a formal permission from your doctor.
  • People suffering from nephrogenic diabetes insipidus are also often asked to consume a low protein diet in order to reduce the symptoms and effects of this disease.
  • In some cases, correcting any underlying reason which causes this disease may also help. For example, hypercalcemia is an underlying cause which has been found to result in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in many cases. Thus consultation of the doctor is very important to identify any of such an underlying cause.
  • In some cases, this disease is caused due to lithium and is these cases; potassium-sparing diuretics like amiloride may be prescribed by the doctor. This medicine helps the patient to excrete as much as lithium as possible.

Before following any of these treatment methods, consultation of a doctor is strongly recommended and advised.
