Low back pain (LBP) is a chronic musculoskeletal illness that affects most people at a certain point in life. It is classified into three categories according to the onset and duration of symptoms: acute (less than 4 weeks), sub-acute (4-12 weeks) or chronic (more than 12 weeks). LBP may have been some sort of disability to you due to its recurrence and troublesome symptoms.

For those of you who are unaware yet, several conditions may be causing your low back pain; it could be mechanical in nature like Degenerative Discs, Spinal Disc Herniation or Slipped Disc, Spinal Stenosis, Fractures, Leg Length Difference, Abnormal Foot Pronation and Congenital Abnormalities, to name a few common disorders.

Another cause could be inflammatory in nature, like Rheumatoid Arthritis or Infection. There could also be cancer associated conditions like Bone or Spinal Tumors. Osteoporosis and Osteomalacia are metabolic conditions that can manifest LBP also. It is best to seek your health professional’s advice to know what is causing your LBP symptoms.

There might be a number of causes of LBP, however, with proper management and therapy, you might be able to take good control of your condition.

Remember again, that before you start with any LBP exercise you have to get the clearance of your health care provider, otherwise your condition may get worse. The series of exercises attempts to improve the flexibility and the strengthen your trunk and abdominal muscles.

The exercise program prepared by your health care provider should be done on a regular basis to see improvements and it should be performed in an observed pace to ensure safety. Lastly, it is a must to STOP the exercise program if the pain gets severe.

LBP treatment includes physical therapy involving a wide range of therapies like heat therapy, ultrasound, massage, mobilization exercises and education programs about proper body mechanics and posture.

Low Back Pain exercises’ objective is to strengthen the muscles, to stabilize and lessen the pressure on the spine. Other exercises that will relieve LBP symptoms include:

Knee to Chest exercise

Today, you should know there are a lot of ailments that are related to an excessive lifestyle and poor eating habits.

One such ailment would be gout, which is common among young people and older aged individuals. To be more specific, gout is a form of arthritis wherein your uric acid crystals are formed in the joints of an individual.

This happens when uric acids are not properly dissolved in the system, but instead form these crystals that induce a lot of pain.

Did you know that individuals who suffer from gout usually get the ailment in different ways? It has been stated that gout attacks usually occur when you go through excessive eating of rich foods and eventually forces you to seek treatment for gout.

Surgery may also be a factor which helps in causing gout, and the use of certain medications are also considered a major cause.

People constantly seek treatment for gout. Its symptoms like excessive or sudden pains, stiffness in joints, and more can greatly affect one’s health. Luckily, there are many kinds of treatment for gout such as the following:

Utilizing the proper diet and intake of foods: This treatment for gout is not something that will eliminate the ailment itself. Instead, it is a preventive measure for controlling one’s uric acid. With a controlled intake of nutritious foods, you can prevent gout. Perhaps if you are not sure of what foods contribute to the rise of uric acids, you may ask and consult your doctor on these matters. It is important that you know these so that proper control and treatment for gout can be done.

Control over alcohol: Treatment for gout also includes minimizing the intake of alcoholic beverages that contribute to the rising of uric acid levels. Perhaps consulting your doctor as to which alcoholic beverage contributes most in uric acid levels is a must.

Proper and healthy lifestyle: This treatment for gout focuses more on your physical fitness. As reports have shown, proper exercise helps you prevent gout attacks by promoting proper body cycle. Exercise also helps in your treatment for gout by reducing your weight.

Water therapy: This treatment for gout is usually done when you drink excessive amounts of water daily to help reduce gout attacks. The idea is for your body to expel the unwanted waste that contributes to gout.

Correct medication: Medication is usually done to prevent the most severe of gout cases. You must remember that this treatment for gout is usually done after proper screening and consultations. One has to take gout medication to prevent swelling and stiffness and gout attacks in the near future.

You should remember that gout can be prevented and avoided if you are really serious about overcoming it. Prevention is the best cure for it. By knowing what is good for you and what is not can prove to be the greatest help you can ever get.

Have you ever heard your grandparents complained about pains in their joints particularly on their wrists, knees and ankles? It’s only normal for people of their age to experience such discomfort as they are prone to rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints, commonly the ones found in the hands and feet. It affects the lining of the joints which results in a painful swelling, which, in severe cases and later stages of the disease, can lead to bone erosion and joint deformity.

Although there is no cure, a range of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is available. The treatment provides relief from the pain and inflammation while helping to maximize joint function and reduce deformity as much as possible.

The treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is only effective when taken with holistic care, together with much rest, medication, joint-strengthening therapy, and education. Treatment for rheumatoid arthritis may also be customized to the patient’s occupation, age, gender, health condition, and joint activity.

The medications used to treat rheumatoid arthritis fall into two categories: the first-line drugs, which are fast acting medications, and the second-line drugs, which are slow-acting.

First-line treatment for rheumatoid arthritis includes steroids and aspirin, and aim to reduce the pain and inflammation caused by the disease. On the other hand, second-line treatment such as methotrexate, gold, and hydroxychloroquine, basically act to prevent further joint destruction.

Common treatments from both categories are:

NSAIDS, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are effective in reducing pain and inflammation. The NSAIDS treatment for rheumatoid arthritis can be bought over-the-counter at pharmacies, such as ibuprofen and other painkillers. There are also stronger versions of these medications used to treat more severe cases, but require a prescription to obtain.

Immunosuppressants act to tame the immune system which, as a result of rheumatoid arthritis, becomes out of control. However, a side effect of this treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is that it increases one’s vulnerability to infections.

Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs work to slow the development of the arthritis and save the joints as well as other tissues from further damage.

TNF-alpha inhibitors are another treatment for rheumatoid arthritis which is also actually an inflammatory substance produced by our bodies. These are effective in minimizing pain, swelling, and tender joints which usually occur during initial stages of treatment.

For some extreme cases, treatment for rheumatoid arthritis may not be enough and your doctor may deem it best to resort to surgery.

Rest is one of the most important factors when dealing with treatment and medication, and no matter which type of medication you resort to, you should always get enough rest to avoid further straining of your muscles. Avoid performing rigorous exercises or subjecting yourself to a lot of stress.

In order to supplement treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, physical therapy is also recommended.

An occupational therapist can help you deal with simple everyday tasks which the disease may make an obstacle, such as picking up objects, walking, or holding items.

Along with therapy and treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, your doctor may also prescribe the use of additional supportive devices that you can use to make daily life easier.

Other patients also use natural remedies like drinking ginger tea or including herbs in their diet.

I am sure everyone would agree that low back pain is one of the most common and chronic diseases that affect almost every adult at some point in time. Americans alone were estimated to spend $50 billion per year for treatment and management according to the National Institute of Health.

And since this is one of the most common causes of job related illnesses, the most difficult to treat and the most costly, people have resorted to various treatment regimens to relieve them of the pain symptoms. Management included, pain relievers, exercise, spinal surgery and manipulation and alternative approaches like acupuncture and biofeedback.

In February 2010, Zara Hansen co-authored a study in the UK on the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of low back pain symptoms.

The objective of which was to challenge how people think about their condition and change their behavior towards it.

This is based on the belief that although it is a physical symptom, behavior may affect how the pain is manifested in an individual.

CBT is a combination of behavior therapy and cognitive therapy that focuses on evidence based treatment of the “here and now” and on alleviating symptoms. The initial therapy sessions lasted for 15 minutes focusing on keeping the individual active with no bed rest and the analgesics were only given when seen appropriate.

Diversional activities were also used like reading a book, watching a movie or listening to the radio. Another session focused on identifying and expressing of negative behaviors toward the symptoms and helping them change the behavior to positive ones.

After a series of therapy sessions information on the back pain symptoms were gathered and compared after 3, 6 and 12 months. Responses after 3 months showed a comparable outcome with other treatment alternatives like acupuncture, exercise and spinal manipulation. And after 12 months, 59% percent of the patients reported having no back pain and 65% noted that they were satisfied with the outcome of the sessions.

Although Hansen believed the result outcome can be considered a useful and cost effective means of treatment, by giving patients a new alternative solution to back pain management, a US pain management specialist, Dr. Laxmaiah Manchikanti doubted if CBT will be accepted in the US no matter how effective it was in the UK.

The use and outcome of CBT may vary with every individual, but it is safe to say that if it had been effective to some, it may also work for you.

Are you or anyone you know, a family member, loved one or friend suffering from rheumatoid arthritis? This could be a very devastating experience for you and your family, as this illness takes a lot of courage to deal with because of the severe pain caused by the swollen and stiff joints from the hands, feet, shoulders, knees and cervical spine. Over time the stiffness can lead to erosion of the joint’s surface and eventually the loss of function.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory illness that can also affect tissues and organs.

The exact cause of RA is unknown, but it is believed that genetics and autoimmunity plays an important role in its progression. It usually affects women 3 times more than men and the onset usually begins at the age of 40 and 50.

RA being a debilitating illness has various treatment modalities available, you can choose from physical therapy, pain management, occupational therapy, nutritional therapy and alternative medicine.

The bad news is, RA is an irreversible disease for now, that is why symptomatic treatment to deal with the pain is the primary focus, but no cure is still available for the disease itself. Another bad news is the use of medications like steroids and analgesics for a long period of time can cause severe complications due to a very poor immune system.

These poor outcomes from the treatment of RA paved the way for a group of scientists to study the human immune system in relation to RA. It is a fact that healthy immune cells act as the soldiers in fighting bacteria and viruses and they naturally die after completing their task.

In the case of RA however, the immune cells lack a certain “Bim” or structure that gives the order for them to self-destruct after a task. What happens is, they remain alive and mutates and cause destruction in the other healthy immune cells.

What the researchers did was to create a synthetic imitation molecule of the “Bim” and labeled it Casper the Ghost or Suicide Molecule and tested them on rats with RA. The clinical trial on rats was successful, the suicide molecules remained undetected by other mutated cells and once the suicide molecules detect the mutated ones, they trigger them to self-destruct.

The objective of the suicide molecules is to decrease the number of mutated immune cells that causes the symptoms and the RA disease to progress. Although this is not yet tested on humans, the researchers are very optimistic that it will create a new path in the control and management of rheumatoid arthritis in humans.

A twelve year old boy woke up one day and got out of bed, to find that his legs were not able to support him; that he wasn’t able to walk without falling.

As the day progressed he lost control of more of his limbs, by the evening he was paralyzed neck down and was being rushed from hospital to hospital as doctors tried to start the best possible treatment for him.

For the next two weeks days he battled for his life, a hole drilled into his neck being his source of sustenance since he was unable to swallow.

That boy is now 30, and has undergone years and years of medication, physiotherapy and with determination has managed to overcome the worst of his paralysis. He still has to wear calipers on his ankles however and his handshake remains rather weak.

What he had was the Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system and is usually characterized by ascending paralysis. This syndrome is one of the leading causes of non-trauma-induced paralysis in the world.

The first symptoms are characterized by the ‘rubbery’ legs described above and then there is a rapid progression of the paralysis upward, within days or even hours.

Facial weakness, sensory loss, deep aching pain, bladder dysfunction, etc are other symptoms.

If your knees make this awful din whenever you squat down or crouch, and again as you are coming back up to standing position; rather like a packet of rice crisps, like a series of cracking or popping sounds, then you have probably wondered what on earth the matter with you is!

You are an otherwise healthy and fairly active person and you have reason to be worried about your knees[Knee injury] as you think of yourself as young and vital, not old and creaky!

The rule of thumb here with creaking or snapping joints, particularly the knees of ankles, is that they are generally no reason to worry unless this creaking and snapping is accompanied by pain.

If there is pain, then the noise and pain should be evaluated and diagnosed for any underlying problem. And this is common in very young people, some of whom may be in their early 20s or even teens.

When there is pain accompanying the popping or creaking sound of the knees, this could be the warning that your knees need help, otherwise it is just something that may be a little disconcerting, but simply something that you need to live with!

Paying attention to one’s posture can be a very effective means to control and even lessen back pain. Here several out of the box solutions suggest themselves:

The Egoscue seeks to go to the root cause of the back pain and are a series of exercises that try to correct the problem using posture and joint alignment. This can ease stress in the area of the back, pelvis, spine, shoulders as well as neck.

Tai chi chuan, translated means something like “supreme ultimate fist,” and is one of the less aggressive martial arts. Chinese medicine uses this system of relaxed, smooth movements as its main tool of physical therapy. This can improve posture and muscle alignment.

The Franklin Method is currently used more in Asia and Europe but is gaining momentum in the U.S as well. This system uses movement, touch and imagery to aid in movement dysfunction.

Often it is the everyday activities such as driving or sitting working at a desk that may cause tension and pain. The Alexander technique can help people function more effectively on a day to day basis. Posture and the way we move may things that cause the body to go off balance, but being aware of the right way to sit, walk, stand and bend over could greatly improve the situation.

If you are a knuckle cracker chances are that you have been berated for the habit not because it can be rather irritating (which it can be) but on the assumption that it’s bad for joints of your fingers; and that it will cause arthritis or similar such problems.

It is commonly observed as a nervous tendency among people or as an attention gaining ploy by children.

Also many people do it because they find temporarily improved mobility in their joints after popping.

The fact is that cracking your knuckles is not going to cause arthritis. However this is not to say that cracking one’s knuckles is harmless. In the long run, it is in fact harmful to crack one’s knuckles because constantly doing this can injure the ligaments that support the joints present in the fingers.

Soft tissue damage to the joint capsule has actually been observed in long time knuckle poppers. When the problem becomes exacerbated, it could cause the grip of the person to weaken because the tendons that attach the muscles to the bones may get loosened.

So for dubious pleasure that knuckle popping seems to evoke, it does cause damage in the long run, so really this may be a habit that one can ill afford.

The cartilage, which is what the skeleton of a shark is made up of, is processed to produce a supplement that is thought to have various different curative/preventive uses.

This post points out the possible uses of shark cartilage to check cancer as well as arthritis. This is how it could be seen to help:

Shark cartilage is a good source of minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, which are required for good bone health, the proper functioning of the body’s organs, and several other vital functions. Due to high content of these minerals, it is advisable to balance this supplement with magnesium to balance out.

There has been some evidence to suggest arthritis sufferers got some relief from shark cartilage supplements by reducing inflammation without suffering any adverse effect.

A certain protein in shark cartilage known to be angiogenesis-inhibiting is seen to inhibit the development of tumors by preventing nutrients from reaching the tumor thereby retarding their growth.

Things to keep in mind with this supplement are that it may not work for everyone, and excess dosage may cause constipation, low blood pressure nausea and fatigue. Also it is not suitable for heart patients, pregnant women, or those with kidney problems.
