Did you know that Americans today sleep about 2 hours less per day than they did 40 years ago? A recent poll conducted by the National Sleep Foundation has revealed this and other startling facts.

Right now it is the economic crisis that is causing people to suffer sleeplessness and it is less sleep that seems to be the root cause for problems including those relating to health issues, poor social lives and infrequent sex.

While for 24% of people polled not getting enough sleep resulted in their missing work days and social engagements, as many as 26% of people in relationships reported that they were often too tired for sex.

The general recommendations of the National Sleep Foundation to get a good night’s sleep are:

Keep to a schedule. It does not have to be early to bed and early to rise, but it does help to have a regular sleep pattern.

Keep the TV out of the bedroom. This will result in lying in bed and watching TV and then some more TV, which time should be better utilized sleeping.

Regular exercise. Quite simply a good exercise routine gets you nice and tired and offers the option of restful sleep.

This results in a lack of sleep for a person, which may cause problems ranging from depression and memory problems, to increased risk of accidents, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Many of them overwork due to second jobs and extra shifts that they take on, resulting in inadequate sleep. Changing jobs is not usually an option in situations like this; rather Dr. Raman Malhotra, an assistant professor of neurology and director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Saint Louis University, suggests other ways to combat lack of sleep:

Make sure that the blinds are properly closed if going to sleep during the day. Reduce light exposure before sleeping so that the brain is not confused.

Wear sunglasses on the way home from work.

Before starting work, be in a well lit room to give your brain the signal of being awake or daytime.

Ask friends and family to be mindful of your sleep schedule.

Consider seeing a specialist if sleep problems continue.

Sleeping well is critical to how well we are able to function at work, school or other activities.

Sleep is an essential restorative process that is fundamental to the body’s state of balance and well-being.

Obviously, there are those times when sleeping will elude you for some reason or other. However, you should consistently aim for getting sufficient sleep if you expect your body to function optimally.

Sadly, going by the phenomenal sleeping pill prescriptions dispensed annually, it seems like a good night’s sleep eludes many.

True, there are various factors that deprive you of sleeping well. However, some simple measures are within your reach, and if effected, it is possible to achieve better sleep.

The sleeping environment, ideally, your bedroom is where you must strive to make changes to achieve a more conducive sleeping zone. It is thought that adjusting room temperature can help you achieve better sleep.

It is best to adjust the room temperature as soon as you walk into your bedroom. Set the room temperature to be cool when you retreat into the room to capture some sleep.

As the night progress, a balance is achieved because your body temperature will have dropped and will be similar to room temperature, thus enabling better sleep.

Finding the right temperature will be easier if you sleep alone. But if you share the room, it may be more complicated achieving a temperature that is satisfactory to both of you and compromise must come in.

Other adjustments that can be made in the sleeping environment are working on the light available and reducing noise level. Light tends to interfere with how quickly one can drift into sleep.

A fair amount of light in the room can also disrupt your sleep. Try and limit the degree of light availability in the room.

If you have a security light just outside your window, you may have to ensure that your blinds or curtains are really thick and dark colored so as to shut out interfering light at night. This also works well to limit light filtering into the room on those brightly lit moonlit nights.

Noise may come from an air conditioner, a fan, a dripping tap or a ticking clock. The fact is, even these sorts of regular noises that we get accustomed to during the day, can sound much louder at night when you’re trying to sleep. They have the capacity to rob you of a good night’s sleep.

So check on the cause of bedroom noises and other household noises, and see how best to minimize or eliminate them. If you’re unable to control the presence of noise, you may want to buy some ear plugs to help you capture better sleep at night.

The restless feet syndrome, also known as restless legs syndrome, is a disorder in the nervous system.

It is generally manifested as a discomfort in the legs, mostly in the feet, that does not allow people to rest them properly or to fall asleep.

The latest statistics suggest that 10% of the world’s population has it, which is not very common but still everyone should be informed and know how to prevent it or treat it.

The main reason for the occurrence of the restless feet syndrome is iron deficiency at the brain level. This is because the brain needs iron to produce various chemicals among which is a movement chemical called dopamine.

So if there is insufficient iron there is also a lack of dopamine and this result with the restless feet syndrome. Also it is possible for people that lack vitamin B to develop this syndrome because the vitamin B calms the central nervous system and with it, it calms the body and the mind.

The feelings that people with the restless feet syndrome have are commonly described as tangling or creeping inside their lower legs, especially the calves. And the most commonly manifested symptom of this syndrome is the great urge to move.

Although it is very hard to describe these feelings and urges with words, people all over the world try to do their best because this is one of the essential things in recognizing and fighting the restless feet syndrome. The effects of this syndrome are mostly sleep loss or the inability to fall asleep and anxiety.

Most usually pregnancy is associated with the start of the symptoms. This happens because while pregnant the organism has increased needs, especially for iron and vitamins. So women that have lack of iron are likely to develop the syndrome when they are with child.

Although there are various medical treatments and therapies for the restless feet syndrome, there are a lot of things an individual can do to fight it. Keeping the legs warm all time and massaging them before going to bed could be very helpful.

Exercise for the legs like weight lifting, resistance training, running or jogging could help people make their leg muscles stronger and therefore less sensible to the effects of the syndrome.

Stretching and meditation could also help. It is recommended to see a doctor if the symptoms are strong because in some cases appropriate therapy is necessary.

A good nights’ sleep is important for everyone, but especially for people who have a Hepatitis infection.

When you sleep you are able to rejuvenate your body, mind and emotions.

When you rest, your liver is resting. It is important to get a full night’s sleep every night of the week.

Your liver will respond best to medication if you have at least twelve hours of sleep. When you are well rested, your body has more energy to be able to fight off the infection.

Sleep allows our bodies to regenerate cells. This is the only time our bodies can produce the growth hormone and a few other anti-aging natural chemicals.

If the sleep that is needed is not achieved, the body doesn’t have the opportunity to regenerate as well, and the tissues of the body will age more quickly. This will result in the body’s immune system having to work a lot harder, and eventually will lead to the immune system weakening.

The lack of good sleep, where you are actually resting, and the body’s inability to regenerate cells, can lead to other diseases besides the Hepatitis infection.

The Hepatitis virus is treated like any other liver toxin while we are asleep. The liver will destroy any toxic elements we may harbor in our bodies.

If we want to keep our liver healthy, and keep allowing for this vital organ to fight off illnesses and bacteria, we need to make sure we do take care of it.

Eating foods that are natural will cause less stress on the liver, as well as making sure we are always well rested. Think of the process that the liver goes through, almost like when we take a shower. Showering cleanses our outer body, and our liver cleanses our inner body.

Endorphins, which were discovered in 1975, are substances which are created in our brain. They offer a pain relieving and stress relieving element very similar to Morphine.

Endorphins latch onto the receptors in our brains, and help to remove the perception of pain that we may have.

Sleep stimulated endorphins allow the whole body to work at fighting the infection or virus. The human body can regenerate up to 2% during 48 hours of sleep.

If you have been diagnosed with Hepatitis, allow yourself the rest and sleep that your body requires. This will not only help your body to heal, but will also allow it to fight off any other illnesses that could hinder your ability to live a healthy and normal life.

If you are one of the many out there who think that snoring is nothing more than an inconvenience that a spouse or a partner has to learn to live with, then you should read further, because snoring is potentially dangerous and can worsen or have underlying medical problems.

Snoring can be the cause of lifestyle impairment and even impact relationships negatively. Don’t ignore the snore because:

Snoring could be caused by and be a symptom of an underlying condition such as sleep apnea, which is a sleep disorder which can cause low blood oxygen or hypoxemia, sleep deprivation and other complications which in rare cases can cause congestive heart failure.

Snoring causes the sufferer to get inadequate sleep or actually suffer from sleep deprivation and people around the snorer would also likely suffer such a fate.

Day time drowsiness and irritability is a characteristic of many snorers since a restful night’s sleep becomes elusive and difficult to get.

In many cases snoring can cause considerable psychological and social damage as well.

Snoring has also been seen as a possible cause for lowering of the libido.

Studies have shown a correlation between loud snoring and heart attack as well as stroke, that loud snorers were far more at risk from heart attacks and stroke than non snorers.

Snoring has on occasion been cited as a ground for divorce, it can have such a negative impact on inter personal relationships and so adversely affect intimacy. [snoring solutions]

Snoring can have many causes such as throat weakness which causes the throat to close during sleep. Sometimes it could be stress related tension in the muscles that may misalign the jaw, causing the sleeper to snore.

Fat deposits in the throat area are sometimes responsible for snoring, which is why weight gain can suddenly result in a person starting to snore. Very often it is an actual obstruction in the nasal passageway or the touching of tissues at the top of the throat touching that causes a person to snore volubly.

Some people snore after having a few drinks because the alcohol makes the muscles of the throat to go slack. Many people also find that they snore more when they lie on their back because this causes the tongue to be forced back into the mouth.

So whatever the reason, prolonged snoring could be causing you problems that you don’t even realize, so it is best to get it investigated and cured.

Is it difficult to sit quietly and read, watch television, or even drive without falling asleep?

Have you ever woken up during the night choking, and gasping for breath? Does your partner complain that you snore? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you could be suffering from sleep apnea.

More than 12 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. There are three basic sleep apnea classifications. In obstructive sleep apnea, your airway becomes obstructed and you are temporarily unable to breathe. This is often caused by the tissue in your soft palate.

In central sleep apnea, your brain “forgets” to signal your body to breathe. Mixed sleep apnea is when a patient suffers from both obstructive and central sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is a dangerous disease. It can cause hypertension, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, trouble remembering things, impotency and headaches. Falling asleep while at work or while driving can have serious consequences as well.

If you suspect you have sleep apnea, talk to your doctor. A sleep study can be used to diagnose sleep apnea. During a sleep study, you will sleep in a sleep lab while connected to a variety of monitors that will give the doctor a picture of how well you sleep.

If you are found to have sleep apnea, you will probably be prescribed a continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP device to use at home while sleeping.

One possible cause of daytime drowsiness and fatigue is sleep apnea.

When you have sleep apnea, you stop breathing while you are sleeping. You may find yourself waking up coughing and choking, or you may notice nothing but snoring.

If you find yourself sleepy while driving, or if you fall asleep while trying to read or watch television, sleep apnea could be the culprit.

To diagnose sleep apnea, your doctor will order a sleep study. This involves your spending the night in a sleep lab hooked to a number of pieces of equipment that will record your brain activity, detect facial movement such as:

The rapid eye movement that occurs during dreaming

Measure your blood oxygen saturation level

Measure your respiration and heart rate

Detect snoring

Clenching and grinding of the teeth

Symptoms of restless leg syndrome.

You are typically also recorded while you are sleeping. Technicians in the sleep lab will monitor you as you sleep. The process is not painful, though trying to sleep with all the various monitors and electrodes attached can be a bit difficult at first.

If you are found to have sleep apnea, you will typically need a CPAP or BiPAP machine to use while sleeping. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure and BiPAP for bi-level positive airway pressure.

Both of these machines provide a positive, forced stream of air which helps keep your airways open and keep you breathing. [sleep apnea treatments]

The CPAP does this continually, as the name implies, while the BiPAP machine provides the air less forcefully during the time you exhale.

Your doctor will order a second sleep study to determine the lowest setting at which your CPAP or BiPAP will be effective in preventing sleep apnea episodes.

Sleep apnea is a dangerous disease. More than just tiredness, it can cause elevated blood pressure and even increases your risk of heart attack and stroke.

If you have sleep apnea you may be more likely to be depressed or overweight as well. Falling asleep while driving can also have serious and fatal consequences. If you think you have sleep apnea, or you are chronically tired, talk to your doctor.

For many people today sleep seems to be elusive or unattainable.

It is estimated that one out of every eight people experience sleepless nights or chronic insomnia, on a regular basis.

This can lead to a number of problems including exhaustion, lowered immune system, and risks for injury due to lack of coordination.

However, insomnia can also have lasting effects on the body for years to come. In recent studies it has been discovered that insomnia can be a factor in the development of heart diseases like heart attacks.

Stress Can Be the Culprit

While everyone knows that not being able to sleep can be a product of a stressful life, stress caused by lying in bed fighting to fall asleep, can be the culprit of heart disease.

It is thought that the stress caused by tossing and turning can raise blood pressure to unsafe levels, and lead to heart disease over the course of many years.

In addition to being the culprit in cardiovascular diseases, studies also show this can raise the risk for stroke and other conditions as well.

Sleeping Late can be Beneficial

Another recent study examined the amount of sleep required to prevent stress on the heart. In most cases seven and a half hours each night will be plenty.

However, patients who slept more than this amount actually saw a decrease in the development of heart disease.

For example, sleeping one hour more per day is thought to reduce the chances of developing heart disease by almost one third. What better excuse can you find to sleep in on a regular basis?

What Causes Insomnia?

If you want to eliminate the risk of heart disease you first have to discover what is keeping you awake. There are many medications and medical conditions that can cause sleepless nights.

The best thing to do is discuss the condition with your doctor, to first eliminate the possibility of other serious medical conditions like sleep apnea, or restless leg syndrome.

If no medical reason can be found, your insomnia may be caused by normal distractions, or interruptions in sleep.

Many people find that sleeping with the television on can cause them to wake up at night. Pets can also cause a disturbance that wakes you up in the middle of the night.

Natural Options for Falling Asleep

If you can’t seem to fall asleep or if you wake up every few hours, there are many things you can do to fall asleep and stay asleep. First eliminate any distractions that can keep you up, or wake you in the middle of the night. [Good Night Sleep]

Most people need a dark, quiet environment to sleep best. If you can’t fall asleep to begin with, you might consider reading or drinking a glass of a hot liquid.

However, if nothing seems to provide relief, you might consider taking a sleep aid to retrain your body’s time clock. There are many non habit forming options available.

By discovering the cause for your sleepless nights, and getting some rest, you will feel better now and in the future.

But with new research showing that poor quality sleep can be more dangerous than we realized, we can all take steps to make sure we get enough sleep and that the sleep we do get is restful.

Here are some ways to improve your chances of having a good night sleep.

Eat a healthy diet, but avoid eating just before bedtime. If heartburn is a problem, avoid having spicy or fatty foods at dinner.

Exercise regularly, but not within three hours of bedtime, when it could energize you.

Drink plenty of caffeine free liquids, but not near bedtime so you can avoid those middle-of-the-night trips to the bathroom. Avoid caffeine in the hours before bedtime; it can take up to 8 hours for your body to process and eliminate caffeine.

One more reason not to smoke: nicotine is a stimulant and can make it harder for you to sleep.

Keep a regular sleep schedule, even when you’re not working.

You should also set your bedroom for a good night sleep.

Make sure your bed is comfortable by choosing a mattress and pillow that are comfortable for you. Make sure you have plenty of room if you share your bed with someone.

The ideal sleep space is dark and cool. Blackout curtains or eye masks can help you achieve darkness. You’ll sleep better in a room that is slightly cool. Add an extra blanket if needed.

Your bedroom should be quiet or have a soothing noise. A humidifier, fan, ambient sound or white noise machine can create soothing noise.

A regular evening routine (bath, reading or music, then lights out, for example) can help your body learn when it’s time to go to sleep.

If you are having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor to rule out possible sleep disorders or other physical problems that could be interfering with your sleep.
